Flashback Friday | "Just a Friend" - Biz Markie

Today's Flashback Friday brings us back to 1989 for "Just a Friend", off Biz Markie's second album, The Biz Never Sleeps. This was his most successful single, reaching #9 on the Billboard charts. However, he is perhaps more well-known in history for his song, "Alone Again" which was the basis for a lawsuit by Gilbert O'Sullivan, who claimed copyright infringement for his sample of his composition, "Alone Again (Naturally)". The landmark 1991 landmark ruling, Grand Upright Music, Ltd. v. Warner Bros. Records, Inc., altered the landscape of hip-hop, deciding that all samples must be cleared with the original artist before being used.
